I wanted to provide you with an update regarding burglary, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. We are pleased to share some positive news with our residents: burglary has reduced across all three wards in the previous 28 days.
Stanmore: 4 offences Belmont: 6 offences Canons: 2 offences
This downward trend is encouraging and reflects both your vigilance as a community and the proactive work of your local policing team.
👀 Stay Vigilant & Think Like a Burglar We would like to take this opportunity to remind residents to remain alert for any suspicious behaviour. A helpful exercise is to look at your home from the perspective of a burglar—consider how someone might try to gain access and what simple steps you could take to make your property a harder target.
🏡 Home Security Tips to Help Reduce Risk 🚨 Deter offenders before they get near the house Consider installing:
External boundary sensors linked to lighting and/or alarms Motion‑activated security lights Visible CCTV cameras placed out of reach
These measures can deter trespassers at the earliest point—often preventing attempted break‑ins entirely. 🔒 Secure the rear of your property Most burglaries occur via the rear, so ensure:
Fencing or gates are secure and in good repair Rear access points are locked Lighting covers darker areas such as side passages or gardens
🪟 Strengthen doors and windows
Add security laminate to rear glazing to make it harder to smash Ensure locks are in good working order Consider upgrading vulnerable or older windows and doors
đź’Ž Secure your valuables Keep valuables:
Out of sight Stored in harder‑to‑reach or unexpected locations Locked away where possible
Simple changes can significantly reduce the likelihood of offenders finding items quickly.
👮‍♂️ Your Local Police – Working Hard to Keep You Safe Our local policing team has been running a proactive operation across Stanmore, Belmont and Canons to target burglary offenders, increase patrols, and reassure residents. These efforts will continue as we work to maintain and build on the recent reductions.
If you ever see anything that doesn’t look right, please report it. Your information helps us act quickly and effectively. Together, we can continue to make our neighbourhoods safer. Stay safe and thank you for your ongoing support.
While we will continue to pursue burglars in the area, there are steps you can do to help keep your property safe. Make sure that you: Double lock your door every time you leave the house If you can, move garden furniture or bins away from windows so that thieves cannot use them to gain access. Use laminated glass or security film on ground floor and accessible windows. Use a sash stop if you have sash windows to prevent people opening them enough to climb through. If your windows open outwards, use a key operated lock – check these are locked before leaving the house. Make sure all valuables are out of sight. Keep handbags and keys away from letterboxes or cat flaps. In the evening shut the curtains and leave lights on. Set your burglar alarm Lock your shed or garage Mark, register or record your valuables.
